New Jersey native Patricia Dombrowski (Danielle Macdonald) is the titular Patti of this coming-of-age, uplifting story from debuting director Geremy Jasper.
Rapping under the moniker Patti Cake$, she tries to escape from her neighbourhood and build the musical career that her mother never had. The unapologetic, raucous and fantastically self-assured Patti is aided by an eclectic group formed of her pharmacist friend Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay), her grandma (Cathy Moriarty) and a mysterious rocker (Mamoudou Athie) that uses a shed as a recording studio.
Lauded as one of the best hip-hop movies of the 21st century, Patti Cake$ uses infectious freestyle rap music and exuberant music-video-like shots, making for a rousing experience anchored by a terrific performance from Danielle Macdonald who shows-off her musical chops.
