Congratulations! You’re part of Sheffield RAG’s Spiderwalk 2017; A fun-fuelled, half marathon hike through the peaks at night to raise money for charities. Featuring a bar, BBQ and live music at our farm half way point the event is bigger and better than ever and will be raising money for some incredible local charities. PLUS your ticket includes your food, hi vis jacket, map, entry to the live music and runner number and registration for the event, what a bargain! In preparation for the hike, we need you to have a thorough read through of the Terms & Conditions below, to ensure you’re fully informed & ready for Spiderwalk 2017!


As stated on the ticket, by taking part in Spiderwalk you are committing to raising £30 minimum sponsorship. Gift Aid does not count towards your sponsorship.

You have until Monday 20th November to raise and pay in the £30. Please see the fundraising packs for help and guidance on how to raise the money if needed.

RAG stands for Raising and Giving so of course the fundraising element of this event is crucial. Although, the minimum sponsorship is £30, we want everyone to raise as much money as they can for charity! We understand some of you may never have fundraised before so below are details about how to set up an online sponsorship page and paying money in that you collect as cash sponsorship.





Last year Spiderwalk raised over £3000 which contributed to RAG’s overall total of

£110,000. We aim for 85% of that total to be donated to support the amazing work done by local South Yorkshire charities.


In 2017 the event will be raising money for Whirlow Hall farm, Sheffield Volunteering and an additional two charities, one voted for by students and one chosen by the students who raised the most money last year. All the charities will be local to Sheffield or the surrounding areas.

*Sheffield RAG is part of a charity and is self-financing. Therefore, the costs of running the programme safely and successfully have to be covered by the programme itself. These costs include staffing, first aid training of the committee, merchandise for fundraisers, resources such as buckets and seals. It was agreed by the Student’s Union Council and Student Executive Council that the best way to fund the programme costs was by taking 10% from all net fundraising (the total left once any event expenses have be deducted). This 10% then goes towards meeting the core costs of the programme and ensures that RAG continue to provide excellent support to student fundraisers and run a safe and lucrative programme.


Arrive at The Activities and Sports Zone in The Student’s Union

at 6pm on Thursday 2nd November.

Here you will be registered, given your high-vis jacket and a map. It is from here that everyone begins the Spiderwalk!

PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR A HIKE IN NOVEMBER. We strongly recommend that you wear warm clothes (hat, scarf, gloves, jumpers etc) and suitable footwear (flat shoes with good grip that are comfortable to walk long distances in) and bring a waterproof. We strongly advise you don’t wear jeans as when they get wet, they stay wet. It will be cold and could be wet and windy so please be prepared and wear lots of layers!

Bring a torch with you! This is a night hike and you will need a torch to see your map and the path ahead of you. Try outdoor shops and discount stores but make sure that you have enough battery power and a torch strong enough for a night hike- we do not recommend using your phone torch.

Remember to bring your phone with you fully charged on the night and change your next of kin contact name to ICE (in case of emergency) in your mobile. In case of emergency we can contact your family straight away.

Bring a bottle of water with you, you’ll need to keep hydrated on the hike. Maybe even a flask and hot drink!

Please remember at all times that you’re representing the University of Sheffield, so be conscious of noise levels and behaviour. Your own alcohol is not permitted inside the pub. We want you to have a great time but not at the expense of the local community!

Please complete the walk and come back to the Students’ Union . It is of the upmost importance that each individual returns to the Union Check Point once the hike has ended so we can note that you have completed the hike safely. Failure to do so will result in us assuming you are missing. If you wish to leave the event early you must let us know by phone.

There will be a Safety Phone in operation on the night, if you need any help, you are lost or haven’t seen a steward in a while or someone in your group is injured, please call us. Although in the case of real emergencies, call 999 first if needed, then please call us!

The number will be given to you on the night.



Your ticket includes:

The 13 mile walk through the peak district

A map of the route

A hi-vis vest

A delicious meal (vegetarian option available if stated on registration), and tea or coffee in Whirlow Hall Farm (half-way point)

Entertainment at the half way point


Fundraising support


 To take part; you must register your place via the online form and then purchase your ticket from the Union Box Office online via the link on the final page. If you do not register your details then you will not be able to take part in the event.


We will have qualified first aiders on the night and all participants will be given an emergency helpline. We also work with the local police, emergency services and Edale Mountain Rescue.

There will be a steward safety car available on the evening should you need to be picked up.


In line with Union policy the ticket is non-refundable*. You can sell your ticket on as long as you let the Spiderwalk Committee know in advance. In this instance please contact rag@sheffield.ac.uk .

*In the case that the event cannot go ahead i.e. if the weather conditions are deemed too bad to continue with the event, Sheffield RAG reserve the right to move the event. You will be notified by text and email at least 3 hours before the event to the contact details you provided us with. This is extremely unlikely and will only happen in extreme weather conditions. Assume the event is on if you do not received communication otherwise.

 If you are no longer able to participate or choose not to, the event is cancelled or you sell on your ticket then please note that we are not able to refund any sponsorship or fundraised money, it will be given to charity as planned originally.
