Director: Dominic Cooke Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emily Watson Country: UK Language: English Based on Ian McEwan’s Booker Prize-nominated novella of the same name, On Chesil Beach is a drama that explores sex and the societal pressure surrounding intimacy in the 1960s, where old-fashioned ideas of class and gender were still common. It follows the story of a pair of young lovers, Florence and Edward (Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle respectively) who unsuccessfully attempt coitus on their wedding night. Due to their differing ideas on the subject, they react differently to the lack of intimacy, creating fractures in their relationship. A touching adaptation, featuring fantastic performances from its leads, this film is a must-watch for fans of the book, as well as anyone else who enjoys powerful stories of simultaneous joy, heartbreak, and sadness.
