Director: Marielle Heller Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant Country: USA Language: /English A biopic of the American author Lee Israel, Can You Ever Forgive Me? tells the story of how Israel, portrayed fantastically by Melissa McCarthy, forged fake letters from deceased celebrities and sold them to unsuspecting buyers. This is forced by Israel’s lack of work as biographical writer, and a combination of writer’s block and alcoholism, which prevent her producing anything else. Based on her own memoirs, the film looks at Israel’s torturous relationship with fame, as well as her troubles both with herself and the people around her. Although it may seem like a downbeat and melancholy tale, McCarthy’s natural comic timing give the film a lot of wit, adding a lot of depth to an otherwise unlikeable character. It has to go down as one the best performances of her career.
