Director: Andrea Arnold Cast: Katie Jarvis, Michael Fassbender Country: Netherlands/UK Language: English Fish Tank is the gritty and compelling story of Mia (Katie Jarvis), a troubled and socially isolated teenager living on an Essex council estate with her mum and younger sister. When her mother’s new boyfriend, Conor (Michael Fassbender), starts to spend time with Mia, they form an uneasy friendship, mainly built around him encouraging her passion of dance. A BAFTA-award winning drama, the film is guided by Andrea Arnold’s brilliant direction, which manages to maintain the realism of the setting, whilst also offering themes of hope and sympathy, unlike many similar to it. The fantastic performances of both Jarvis and Fassbender should also be noted, especially given Jarvis’ complete lack of prior acting experience.
