Director: Akira Kurosawa Cast: Takashi Shimura, Nobuo Kaneko Country: Japan Language: Japanese Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura) has worked as a civil servant, leading the same dull life in the same passionless department, for 30 years. His relationship with his family has been slowly eroded as is drive, motivation and energy have been weathered by his inexorable dedication to a miserable, lifeless work. However after he is found to be terminally ill, Kanji finally starts to find meaning and live his life to the fullest while attempting to leave something behind. There arn't many films that I can think of a handful of films which have made me feel so cold and yet given me such powerfully life-affirming motivation all at once. Even after having seen the film a number of times I still get chills thinking about it.
