Director: Deborah Haywood Cast: Lily Newmark, Joanna Scanlan Country: UK Language: English Not an easy viewing, but certainly a powerful one, Pin Cushion is the directorial debut of Deborah Haywood that follows a slightly unorthodox mother and daughter as they try and integrate into society. Starting at a new school, the daughter, Iona, has difficulties with a popular group, who she makes ‘friends’ with, whilst the mother, Lyn, struggles to establish a network in the new area. The film also shows Iona and Lyn’s fracturing relationship as they both go their own way. Tackling topics such as bullying and complex mother-daughter relationships head on, the story gives a delicate-yet-powerful look at life for those considered outside of normality.
