Director: Hirokazu Koreeda Cast: Lily Franky, Sakura Andô Country: Japan Language: Japanese Shoplifters follows a Japanese couple who take in a small child from the streets, despite being below the poverty line themselves. Having previously relied on petty theft to make ends meet, the family are worried that the new addition will draw attention to their crimes, putting their motivations into question. Beautifully directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, the film shows the struggles of poverty, even for people who have jobs, and what they must do to survive, but also how warmth and togetherness can help people pull through. Winner of the 2018 Palme d’Or, Shoplifters is a real gem of a movie, and a marvellous export of Japanese cinema.
