Monty Python’s Life of Brian opened to a storm of Biblical proportions: 11 councils banned it and 28 overruled the BBFC by giving it an X-certificate. It’s the story of Brian of Nazareth (Graham Chapman), who is mistaken for the Messiah (Ken Colley), when in fact he’s just “a very naughty boy.” Brian’s life parallels that of his more famous peer, until he joins the People’s Front of Judea (or was it the Judean People’s Front?) and comes up before Pontius Pilate (Michael Palin)... Directed by Terry Jones, Life of Brian is a satire on Biblical epics and religious intolerance. It was a big hit in the UK and America and in 2006 was ranked at Number One by Channel 4’s 50 Greatest Comedy Films.
