Acclaimed as a landmark independent film, ‘Nothing But a Man’ follows Duff, a black American man who refuses to accept the status-quo and struggles for the simple dignity of respect. Set in 1960’s Alabama, Duff was a drifting railroad worker until he met Josie. The genteel daughter of a small-town preacher captures his attention, despite her father’s disapproval, and they soon marry and settle down. But as Duff tries to find a stable job to support his wife, he comes up against the challenges of discriminatory white bosses and other black workers who are too scared to rock the boat to stand up for themselves. A sensitive and subtly acted film that still feels remarkably relevant.
