Kena and Ziki were raised to be good Kenyan wives. But they long for something more. In a Shakespearian context of rivarly between their two families, the girls battle to stay in contact and remain friends. But as they fall in love with each other, they have to face repressing that love and staying safe in their conservative society, or abandon the comfort of their homes and live their love freely. A milestone work of cinema, Rafiki reminds us why stories of oppression are as important as ever. Wanuri Kahiu’s work is reminiscent of early Spike Lee. This film takes a familiar story and tells it with lively energy and heart.
